An Exercise in Constraints

For some creative people, time is not an issue. And either is money, for that matter. Or even resources. (Well, I’ve heard that anyway.) But for most of us, there are limitations to a job, project, or assignment.

For a recent spec commercial, the constraints that were given to me by filmmaker Adam Huber went something like this: We can shoot a commercial this week….but we only have one actor…and we don’t have a sound mixer…and I know you had a great idea with a cat, but we don’t have time for that…if you can think of something simple with one actor, no dialogue, and no special effects by tomorrow night, I’ll shoot it.
